Being new to Bend and new to cyclocross, I was thrilled to get to take in some up close and personal action at the USGP Deschutes Brewery Cup on Saturday, December 8th, at the Old Mill District.
The rider in the picture below was the first casualty we spotted shortly after our arrival. Check out that wheel!
For those unfamiliar with cylocross, I apologize in advance for the picture below as it won’t help you understand it at all. The course winds around back and forth all over the place.
I still don’t fully understand the details of cyclocross but the course itself consisted of riding on the grass at times, riding through the mud, up dirt hills then back down through more muddiness. There were ramps to ride up and over, obstacles that bikes were getting carried over, stairs that bikes were being carried up, and a little bit of pavement. That was what I could see while roaming around, I’m not sure what all else was out there on that particular course. Riders did several laps and, from what I understand, have a set time period where they complete as many laps in that time period as possible.
Of course, since we were at the Deschutes Brewery Cup we figured we should walk on over to the Deschutes Brewery. After all, we hadn’t been there before and they were one of the generous hosts of this event. Did you know they give free samples there? Ah.. it was a delicious treat! Beware, you may spend lots of money. Well, we did.. and that was before we even started any sampling.
From what I’m learning about Bend, there seem to be many cyclocross events held throughout the year and this new girl in town is quite eager to take in some more.
See you out there!
